Las Vegas Raiders wide receiver Michael Gallup announced his sudden retirement less than three full months after signing a one-year deal with the franchise, ESPN 's Paul Gutierrez reported on Tuesday (July 23).

Gallup, 28, participated in the Raiders' OTAs and minicamp sessions during the offseason and was expected to compete for the No. 3 receiver spot, but instead opted to announce the conclusion of his career. The six-year veteran recorded 266 receptions for 3,744 yards and 21 touchdowns, having spent his entire career with the Dallas Cowboys prior to being released on March 15 to open $9.5 million in salary cap space.

Gallup, a third-round pick in the 2018 NFL Draft, had previously signed a five-year, $57.5 million deal with the Cowboys in 2022, despite tearing the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee the previous season. The former Colorado State standout averaged 15.5 yards per catch prior to the injury, but was limited to just 73 receptions for 842 yards and six touchdowns during the past two seasons, having never exceeded 100 yards receiving during a regular season game in that span.

Gallup did, however, record six receptions for 103 yards during the Cowboys' Wild Card Round playoff loss to the Green Bay Packers in January.
