When Randy Rogers release new music, you listen. Born in Cleburne, TX and a current resident of New Braunfels, Rogers has long been a staple on the Texas music scene, and throughout his storied career has garnered a considerable amount of national attention and fame. Ever since the Randy Rogers Band's 2002 debut record Like It Used To Be
, Rogers and his band have been tearing up the scene and winning fans over everywhere. With nine studio albums, two live albums, and a handful of singles under the Randy Rogers Band name, including their most recent record Homecoming in 2022, and in addition to Rogers' acclaimed collaborative efforts with Wade Bowen dating back to 2015, Rogers has been nothing short of prolific throughout his two decade career. In the spirit of such prolificity, just a week after teaming up with Bowen on their six track project Hold My Beer, Vol. 4 , Rogers surprised fans with an unannounced single titled "Old Hat" this past weekend. And if you're a big Randy Rogers fan, you may have heard this one before. Originally written and recorded by an indie-rock artist and fellow Texan named Ben Kweller, "Old Hat" was included on his
Changing Horses record in 2009, which was much more country inspired and full of pedal steel and dobro than the rest of Kweller's catalog. Rogers then recorded a version of "Old Hat" that was released in 2017 on Bruce Robison's The Next Waltz, Vol. 1 compilation, which was only available in physical form and features the track alongside other covers and originals by artists like Wade Bowen, Reckless Kelly, and a Turnpike Troubadours song called "Come As You Are." Now, seven years since its initial recording, Rogers and Robison have circled back to this "Old Hat" cover, and released it as a single in tandem with Robison's label The Next Waltz. In the description of the visualizer posted to YouTube upon its release, The Next Waltz provided some context behind the re-release.
"One of the first tracks hit-songwriter Bruce Robison recorded for The Next Waltz at the all-analog studio The Bunker was Randy Rogers covering Ben Kweller's 'Old Hat.' Thus far the tune has only been available on the Next Waltz 'Volume 1' compilation LP, but after seven years since its recording and 15 years since Kweller's album 'Changin Horses' from where the track appears, it is time to celebrate both a copper and crystal anniversary and share the song with a wider audience." in honor of its 20th anniversary. “20 years. They say, 'don’t blink.' Yet, that’s exactly how this feels. We all feel so lucky to still be standing up on that stage playing these songs. What a ride. Cheers to you Rollercoaster!” The 20th Anniversary edition of Rollercoaster , which has been completely remastered and re-sequenced, will be released on August 23rd.
