It's been a drama-filled offseason for the San Francisco 49ers as the club has been in a contract feud with Brandon Aiyuk. However, things took a turn on Wednesday after another star-caliber player joined Aiyuk in demanding a new contract extension.
Head coach Kyle Shanahan announces that superstar left tackle, Trent Williams, is not attending practice for "contract reasons," according to Ian Rapoport of The NFL Network. That's now two key players on the 49ers roster asking for an extension. With the 2024 NFL season right around the corner, the San Francisco front office has some tough decisions to make.
Trent Williams is set to begin his 14th season in the NFL. He first joined the league after being selected by the, then Washington Redskins, back in 2010. After playing 10 full seasons in Washington, Williams joined the 49ers in the 2020 offseason. He now seeks a contract extension ahead of his fifth season in San Francisco.
Williams is regarded as one of the better left tackles in the league. Not having him on the field could prove to be detrimental to the 49ers chances. As of now, there are no reports or details on if San Francisco has spoken with Williams about signing him to an extension.

This is all going on with the Brandon Aiyuk drama still ongoing. However, the star wide receiver is reporting to training camp despite demanding a trade from the organization. As of now, it appears Aiyuk has not participated in any practice whatsoever. So, his future with the 49ers still remains unclear.
Aiyuk has become a proven asset in the 49ers offense. He's coming off of a career year last season after putting up 75 receptions for 1,342 yards (career high) and seven touchdowns. Brandon Aiyuk is a fantastic wide receiver that San Francisco reportedly wants to keep on the roster. Although, the front office has shown no effort in getting a long term deal done with the star wide receiver.
Expectations are high next season as the franchise seeks finally win a Super Bowl in this era. But having some contract drama with now two superstar players could potentially hang a cloud over the team. Luckily for them, the 49ers still have plenty of talent on the roster, as Christian McCaffrey, Deebo Samuel, and George Kittle are locked in with long term contracts.
Look for the 49ers to remain competitive this upcoming season. The drama will continue to surround the franchise though, as the front office must find a way to either please Brandon Aiyuk and Trent Williams, or possibly trade them away.
