BROOKE COUNTY, W.Va. (WTRF) — Starting next year, you’ll be seeing new names outside four Brooke County schools…but they may be the names you’re already using.

Superintendent Dr. Jeffrey Crook says this month the school board approved the change for its elementary schools.

Brooke Primary North will become Hooverson Heights Primary, Brooke Intermediate North will become Jefferson Intermediate, Brooke Intermediate South will become Franklin Intermediate, and Brooke Primary South will become Wellsburg Primary.

Dr. Crook says the names give the schools more of a local identity, and they’re the ones the community remembers from before the schools consolidated.

“We’re just kind of reverting back to give it more of an identity, what people are familiar with, because a lot of people still call it the old name. So we were like, well, let’s just take it back to the original names. You know, it’s not as formal.”

He says it’s not just a matter of swapping out signs.

The county has to make the change with the state school building authority and student information system.

The renaming will be official when students start the 2025-26 school year.
