Next Everton signing was boyhood Liverpool fan and rejected transfer to Anfield

Everton look set to complete the signing of Napoli attacking midfielder Jesper Lindstrom.

The Danish international joined Napoli last summer from Frankfurt for $32million, but looks set to move on after just one season. With Antonio Conte coming as Napoli's new boss, it seems the 24-year-old is a square peg in a round hole, unable to fit into a 3-4-3 or a 3-5-2 which the ex-Chelsea manager favours.

And that has seen him opt to move to Merseyside to join Everton. Lindstrom is expected to complete a medical in the coming days, which will see him sign for Everton on-loan with an option to buy. However, it might take Everton fans a bit of time to warm to their new summer signing.

Following his move to Napoli from Frankfurt last summer, Lindstrom sat down with Danish paper Tipsbladet to discuss why he opted to join the then Serie A champions. And, it was during that interview he revealed he was a Liverpool fan and also turned down a move to Anfield in favour of joining Napoli.

"There was Liverpool after all, but would I get playing time?" mused Lindstrom when asked about why he turned the Reds down.

"Would it be smart to go to Liverpool? I’m a Liverpool fan, it says it everywhere. So it could also be an insanely cool experience.

"But if I’m not playing, I might as well sit and watch them on TV for another club. I’m at an age now where I have to play some football. That’s why I think Napoli is a good change. It is a top club in the world and they have expressed that I will play and I will get a lot of chances."

Given Liverpool overhauled their entire midfield last summer, bringing in Alexis Mac Allister , Dominik Szoboszlai , Ryan Gravenberch and Wataru Endo , it is no guarantee Lindstrom would have gotten major game time at Anfield.

At the time, his decision to prioritise playing probably was an astute decision. However, being moved on from Napoli just one season later after joining from Frankfurt shows just how volatile football can be.
