Florida is not one of the states Vice President Kamala Harris’ campaign has highlighted as focus areas, but Democratic leaders in the Florida Legislature insist that the campaign’s efforts combined with enthusiasm from voters could put the Sunshine State is in play.

Harris has raised $100 million since announcing her bid for the presidency and prompted thousands to join organizing calls, according to her campaign. Florida Senate and House Democratic Leaders Lauren Book and Fentrice Driskell say the outpouring of support is also coming from Florida.

During a Zoom press conference Thursday morning, Book told reporters that more than 6,000 Floridians have signed up to volunteer for the Harris campaign. Driskell said 2,000 Black women joined a state call on Monday to support Harris.

“On those calls, at least in the Florida calls, typically you have maybe 100 people, so to have 2,000 women show up and say that they’re ready to do the work is very exciting,” Driskell said. “So, there’s something special happening here on the center-left, where people are ready to get informed, get engaged, and mobilize their communities to vote. I think that’s going to be essential this election cycle.

“There are some who will try to say that Florida is not in play but let me quell those rumors or suppositions now. Florida absolutely is in play for it. It’s not a red state. It has been a red-performing state.”

Book highlighted Harris’ support for reproductive rights, pointing to the abortion-rights amendment that will be on the ballot in November as an issue on Florida women’s minds.

Meanwhile, the Florida GOP has pushed back against the notion that Florida will be up for grabs in November.

“I’m doing what I always am doing raising more money, but no Florida is not in play. That does not mean we are not fighting up and down the ballot,” Florida Republican Party Chair Evan Power posted on X on Tuesday.
