Chelsea fans got their first taste of football under new manager Enzo Maresca in California this week as the Blues faced Wrexham in a preseason friendly.

The game at Levi's Stadium finished 2-2 , Lesley Ugochukwu rescuing a draw for the Premier League side against the League One team owned by Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds .

Christopher Nkunku gave Chelsea the lead in the first half but goals from Luke Bolton and Jack Marriott turned the game on its head for Wrexham, who had only 25 per cent of the possession but managed four shots on target to their opponents' three.

There was a sense that Chelsea perhaps played into Wrexham's hands in the second half by allowing them to force errors with the ball close to the Londoners' goal.

And Maresca suggested such concerns could be common place this season as he attempts to instil a very specific mode of playing into his squad.

What did Enzo Maresca say about Chelsea's style of play?

Maresca was generally pleased with the manner in which Chelsea played against Wrexham, particularly so early in his time in charge.

He was also not overly concerned about the dangers of building play from the back, insisting that the Blues must learn to accepts the risks of such a system.

Each of Wrexham's goals in Santa Clara came following errors from Chelsea during a largely lacklustre second-half performance.

"The first goal was not from playing out of the back. The second goal was, yes, but the first goal was one bouncing ball, we lost the duel and we conceded the first goal," Maresca said.

"For sure, we are going to concede goals during the season trying to build from the back. Hopefully, we are not going to concede too many, but it is one of the risks that you have trying to build from the back."

Asked if it were important for his players to be brave and persist with this approach, the manager said: "Absolutely. I think you are going to concede goals in different ways, so you just need to decide in which way you will concede goals.

"The result is always important but in this moment, the most important thing is to judge the performance, especially after two weeks since we started."
