Simone Biles Faces Paris Olympic Uncertainty After USA Gymnastics Announcement

Simone Biles will help Team USA compete for the all-around team gold medal at the Paris Olympics.

Just how many events the gold medalist competes in remains to be seen.

Washington Post reporter Emily Giambalvo reported Chellsie Memmel, the technical lead for Team USA, said it would be up to Biles to decide whether she competes in all four events in the team event.

"Chellsie Memmel said she has talked with Cecile Landi, Simone Biles's coach, about the option for Biles to not compete all four events in the team final if they feel that's what's best for her," Giambalvo wrote on X. "Decision is up to Biles, but the option is available."

The move comes after Biles pulled out of several events at the Tokyo Olympics after suffering a case of the "twisties," which caused her to lose orientation and control while in the air. Biles has been open about efforts to address her mental health and will head into the Paris Olympics with more control over her workload.

But the announcement also creates uncertainty whether Biles could choose to compete in fewer events. She looked strong at practices on Thursday. Sports Illustrated writer Stephanie Apstein noted she showed "no signs of the twisties."

Biles has given no indication she intends to pull back, telling reporters that the team is looking for redemption after their "Tokyo performances weren’t the best."

"We weren’t under the best circumstances either. But I feel like we have a lot of weight on our shoulders to go out there and prove that we’re better athletes," Biles said.
