MONROE COUNTY, Ohio (WTRF) — Education, recreation and preservation.

That’s what Monroe County plans to do with its purchase of the 168-acre Riverside Golf Course, which could even put it on the map in the maritime industry.

Through an Appalachian Community Grant, this quiet green space was bought to be transformed into a multi-purpose land of opportunity for both residents and tourists.

With $4.4 million, county commissioners plan to eventually develop for outdoor education.

    New nature paths.
    Pollinator gardens.
    An amphitheater.
And whatever else the community requests.

The former clubhouse will even accommodate a maritime pilot training simulator, which would make it the only one between Pittsburgh and Cincinnati.

“Even though it is floodplain and floodway, this is what you want for recreation and tourism. And I’m sure all the neighbors here are glad that we’re securing this. That it wouldn’t be an industrial site, so to speak.”

    Mick Schumacher, Monroe County Commissioner

And the work on the land is already underway.

Volunteers are mowing and cutting shrubs to make sure that everyone has skin in the game in the community’s future.
