Welcome back to our Patience or Panic series! Now that we have passed the All-Star break, the regular season is almost in the home stretch. For those of us in leagues that have playoffs, the end is even closer, which means it’s time to make difficult decisions that will put our teams in the best position down the stretch. I want to note that the sample sizes from the past month that I will be looking at here are a bit smaller than usual, as we had a few days with no games over the break. Also, keep in mind that the All-Star break can be a time when struggling players reset and make subtle adjustments to try to bust out of a slump. If you have any players that you’re on the fence about dropping, take a closer look at their performance over the next 10 days or so before you pull the trigger. Stats like strikeout-to-walk ratio and pitch-level metrics (O-Swing%, Contact%, etc.) can be particularly useful when looking at only a few games of results. All stats are through the games of July 22.

There were a number of celebrities who passed away within the past week, including two notable actresses: Shelley Duvall and Shannen Doherty. Shelley Duvall passed away on Thursday July 11th at her home in Blanco, Texas. The cause of death was complications from diabetes and news of her death was confirmed by her partner Dan Gilroy.

It took until his 12th appearance in MLB, but Paul Skenes finally has a loss in his ledger, albeit not a very fair one. Facing the Cardinals and Lance Lynn (who became the sixth active pitcher to reach 2,000 strikeouts), Skenes flashed his usual electric stuff to keep hitters off-balance, allowing only two hits and one run through the first five innings. With the offensively-challenged Pirates failing to provide any run support, Skenes cruised through three perfect innings and was at 93 pitches when Pittsburgh finally broke through in the bottom of the eighth to tie the game. While manager Derek Shelton had been criticized by removing the righty phenom during no-hit bids, this time he may have been too caught up in the moment, as Skenes was brought back in the ninth to try to earn a deserved win. Alas, the Cardinals got two more hits, with Alec Burleson’s two-strike knock driving in the winning run. In the end, Skenes left his line at 8.1 innings, with four hits, zero walks, and eight strikeouts. Baseball can be cruel like that.

Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay times reports the Braves are one of a handful of teams expected to pursue starter Zach Eflin. The 30-year-old right-hander has been a reliable mid-level starter with Tampa Bay the last couple of years, and makes sense for Atlanta given the rotation injuries suffered by Spencer Strider and, more recently, Max Fried.

The Giants optioned Rodriguez to Triple-A Sacramento on Wednesday.
