Jerry Jones Makes Big Announcement About Dak Prescott’s Future With Cowboys

Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones is a master at talking out of both sides of his mouth.

Jones has been adamant on wanting to re-sign star quarterback Dak Prescott, yet no headway has been made on locking the 30-year-old QB up to a long-term extension. However, Jones did make a somewhat surprising admission about Prescott’s future Thursday during his media availability at training camp.

“To be very specific, I do not think that this will be his last year with the Cowboys, at all,” Jones said . “Am I being psychotic relative to my mirror? No. It’s pretty clear, I think, I want to say it if it hadn’t been clear of how much we appreciate what Dak Prescott has meant to this team in a positive way.”

Despite Jones’ bold statement, he did, however, leave the door open to the possibility that Prescott might not be re-signed because his market could be more than what the Cowboys could afford to spend with contract extensions also looming for receiver CeeDee Lamb and edge-rusher Micah Parsons.

“But believe it or not, in my life I’ve had a lot of things I wanted that I couldn’t get because I couldn’t afford it,” Jones added. “Now, have I learned to live with that in 80-something years? You bet I have, and life does go on.”

Spotrac lists Prescott’s market value at $53.1 million per season and it expects him to sign a four-year, $212.25 million contract next offseason.

If Jones sinks that kind of money into his QB, it’s unlikely he can also sign Lamb to the kind of long-term deal he wants (likely in the $30M-per-year range) and keep Parsons the following year (top edge-rushers are making $25M to $34M per year).
