MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Md. ( DC News Now ) — If you’re headed to Lake Needwood or Lake Frank in Rock Creek Regional Parks, officials are warning you to be careful because of high levels of blue-green algae.

Montgomery County Parks said Thursday that the Maryland Department of the Environment (MDE) was evaluating samples from both of the lakes to determine if levels of the algae — called cyanobacteria — are dangerous.

Officials said that visual indicators — such as discolored water and algal mats — were reported in the lakes.

If cyanobacteria grow in excess, it can produce harmful toxins — including microcystin, which may harm humans or animals if too much is ingested.

‘Tis the season for swimming and bacteria alerts in lakes, rivers

Montgomery Parks officials said that no swimming is allowed in park lakes, but officials are still concerned about any people or dogs who might swim and/or drink from the lake.

Activities such as boating and fishing are still permitted, but any visitors should follow these tips to stay safe:

    • Avoid direct contact with water while boating or fishing.
    • Do not allow dogs off-leash, and do not let them drink or come into contact with the water or algal mats along the shores.
    • Only eat properly cooked muscle meat of fish.
    • If you come into contact with the water, wash your hands thoroughly before eating, drinking, or smoking.

If a pet has come into contact with the water, officials said to rinse their fur with clean water and seek veterinary care if you are concerned.
