Chubb with some huge shoes to fill at MUS

MEMPHIS – It’s a changing of the guard over at MUS.

For the first time in almost 50 years, Bobby Alston isn’t roaming the sidelines at Memphis University School with longtime Alston assistant Mark Chubb tasked with replacing a legend.

Alston retired at the end of the last season after over 200 wins and four state football titles with the owls. But replacing him with a familiar face, and the return of 22 seniors, helping make the transition that much easier for one of this city’s premier programs.

“That’s helped immensely. Got a great senior class helping with this transition, which has been great and Coach Alston, a highly organized guy, he left the program in great shape,” Chubb said. “Been with him for 18 years. I can say those are big shoes to fill here.”

Alston’s absence is still taking some getting use to.

“It’s definitely a little weird. It’s a different feel. It’s a little weird because everybody’s so comfortable with him,” said Owls senior quarterback Brady Hughes. “But we got a new offense and it’s been a lot to learn. But it’s definitely different. Strange.”

Chubb and the Owls hit the ground running as they open the season, on the road, at Bartlett.
