Atwell steps in to replace forward Rebecca Allen, who aggravated a hamstring injury, according to Team Australia’s Olympic website.

Atwell will make her Olympic debut for Australia’s 5×5 team. She also has experience playing on the 3×3 team.

Australia opens up pool play on Sunday against Nigeria at 11 p.m. HST.

In the Laura Beeman era, Atwell was the only player to get selected in the WNBA Draft following a UH season, getting selected by the Los Angeles Sparks in 2022. She’s also the only player in the Beeman era in the Olympics.

“I am ecstatic for Amy. It has always been a dream of hers to represent Australia in the Olympics. To see her/your hard work pay off, get a little luck and see that dream come true is a chicken skin moment for Amy and everyone that knows her,” Beeman told KHON2 in a statement.
