Oprah and Gayle King Set the Record Straight on Lesbian Rumors

Oprah Winfrey and Gayle King have shared insight on their 50-year friendship during an interview with Melinda French Gates’ Moments That Make Us series, which aired on July 24.

During the episode, Winfrey and King spoke openly about their frienship and stated that they share everything together. However, their close friendship has led to some rumors about the pair being romantically involved, PEOPLE reported. “For years, people assumed we were a couple, and that perception lingered for a long time. It’s even been a challenge in my dating life, as some people believe there’s something more between us ,” Winfrey explained. The pair met in the early 1970s at the Baltimore news station WJZ-TV where an invitation from Winfrey to King during a snowstorm was the start of their friendship. If we were gay, we’d tell you! It’s just frustrating that people can’t accept the depth of our platonic connection ,” King added.

The media mogul acknowledged how King remain supportive of her professional and personal goals throughout the years and stood by her side during challenging moments. “I always assumed every woman had a friend like Oprah. Maybe that’s not true for men, but I thought every woman had at least one person like this in her life,” King said. They agreed that their friendship was built organically in comparison to those who try to use Oprah to create a superficial friendship.

King noted that people tend to be “overly flattering” when it comes to Winfrey so she tries to be honest about everything including how she presents herself.

“In Oprah’s world, people tend to be overly flattering and agreeable. I’m the one who can tell her straight up, ‘That’s not true. Your hair doesn’t look good.'”
