Why has Liverpool not signed any players? Slow start to transfer window explained amid Arne Slot hint

Even your most skeptical of Liverpool fan wouldn’t have expected to be heading into August without a single new signing having been secured .

This is pretty much unheard of for any Premier League side, let alone one with ambitions of the title and European success. With a new era getting underway at Anfield , the expectations were raised even further, but so far it’s been slim pickings for supporters.

We did of course have the Anthony Gordon talks , the Leny Yoro pursuit , and more names than you can shake a stick at being linked, but here we are. With just over three weeks until Liverpool gets its new season underway, it’s still yet to make a move in the summer transfer window.

Those at Anfield seem to be calm about the situation though. New sporting director Richard Hughes predicted there would be a flurry of transfers in the Premier League in August , and it would appear he’s happy to bide his time.

He’s not the only one who likes to take that approach. Michael Edwards is back with FSG , and despite two years away from the Reds, he hasn’t changed his mindset. As pointed out by The Athletic , Edwards is a strong believer in ignoring the outside noise, and has brought that belief back with him in his new role.

It’s an approach that Arne Slot seems more than happy with. The new head coach has spoken a few times about the strength of the squad already in place. "There's already a real good team," he said in his first press conference earlier this month. "There have been a few new signings last season.

"The longer a team plays together, if there's a good manager or a good head coach, normally you see things will improve."

That’s not to say there won’t be any signings this summer though, rather Liverpool is just waiting for the right opportunity. Anfield Index has even suggested the lack of signings so far may be strategic, citing the quick signings of Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai as reasons why there perhaps shouldn’t be as much panic among supporters.

Slot remains in regular contact with Hughes as plans continue for the 2024/25 campaign, and while the head coach’s focus is on the squad he has to hand right now, he has hinted that incomings could finally be on their way soon .

“The first aim is to work with these players,” Slot said on Thursday. “The disadvantage is that many of them aren't here yet. The positive is that it gives us time to take a good look at the youngsters.

“There is an important line at the club that young players come through. Our standards are really high when it comes to bringing in new players. Of course, Richard (Hughes) and I are trying to improve the squad where possible.”

Slot would go on to suggest it would be a ‘surprise’ if Liverpool didn’t make any signings in August. It’s been a long wait, but the Reds may be getting ready to make their mark on the transfer window.
