With school just a few weeks away, we want all children to have a safe, happy, healthy academic year.

However, a new school year means new friends, teachers, clothes, and classrooms, and it’s normal for little ones and parents to feel anxious about returning to school. But we’re here to help make the transition as smooth as possible, especially for the first-timers.

While you can’t prepare children for everything, experts say you can set them up for a successful school year by preparing now.

Here are a few tips for a smooth transition for the first-time student.

    Preparing Children Before School Starts

It’s never too early to prepare for a new school year. It can be scary for any student, especially those new to school, so starting your school routine early makes the first few weeks easier for everyone to adjust.

Additionally, according to the National Sleep Foundation , children ages three to five should get at least 10-13 hours of sleep each night. So, it’s important to set a consistent wake and sleep schedule.

Give Them An Idea Of What To Expect

Your child will most likely be at least a little anxious about starting school, especially if it’s their first time being away from home. Visiting the school is helpful so kids know what it looks like. Also, meet the teacher and administrators so there are familiar faces on day one. To take it a step further, you can also set up playdates before school starts with other families who have first-time students.

    Practice With School Supplies

If a child isn’t sure how to use or open something, it can create a layer of anxiety that can be avoided. Take the time to make sure they know that they’re capable and that they can do it without you. The more opportunity you can give them to try it in the safety of your home while you’re right there, the more confidence they’ll build.

Read Books Together About Starting School

Incorporate stories about starting school into your reading routine at home. Not only important for their development but a fun way for you to bond with one another. PBS Kids has a list of books that are perfect for children heading back to school for the first time. Click here to check them out.

Come Up With a Goodbye And Let Them Know You Will Be Back For Them

Not prolonging your goodbye will make it easier for your child and yourself.  Be sure to reassure your child that you or someone else will be back to pick them up after school.
