Wednesday night showers across the Valley left many homeowners with trash and debris cluttering their properties.

Despite the National Weather Service's warnings about potential damage, many homeowners are now unsure how to dispose of the branches and other wreckage caused by the storms.

Spencer Blake, a spokesperson for the City of Phoenix's Public Works department, said residents can bag any small items and place them in their black bins as usual.

For larger debris, such as fallen branches, residents can place them out for bulk trash collection, provided it is within their scheduled placement week according to the quarterly calendar , Blake said.

Starting September 30th, Phoenix residents can use an appointment-based collection system for bulk trash , Blake announced.

Under the new program, customers can choose a specific day for Public Works to pick up bulk trash, rather than waiting for their designated bulk trash collection week to come around again, Blake said.

"(The new program) will be particularly convenient after damaging storms like the ones we've had this week," Blake said in a statement.

However, if customers have large items and can't wait for their next bulk trash pickup before the new program initiates, they can drop off up to 1 ton of debris per month at either of their transfer stations at no cost, Blake said.

Valley residents will be required to bring their ID and a copy of their city services bill in order to do so, Blake added.

Additionally, Public Works wants to remind homeowners that sandbags for flooding and redirecting debris as a result of major storm events are available at specific city parks .
