Fire at senior living center in Vinita investigated as arson

Vinita Fire Department responded to a fire at the Burroughs Manor apartments Friday afternoon.

Firefighters said several companies and agencies responded from in and around Craig County.

Officials said 40 people were inside but no one was seriously injured. There were a few cases of smoke inhalation.

2 News spoke with resident, Lynn Dixon, at the scene. He said he felt lucky to make it out on time.

"I feel blessed. God said count it all as joy. I could be burning in a hospital somewhere, but, no, I’m happy," Dixon said.

Some first responders had to be treated for heat exhaustion.

Vinita police are investigating the fire as arson and one suspect is in custody.

Vinita Fire chief Kevin Huxtable said it was one of the worst fires his department has fought.

"It’s pretty severe. It’s tough," Huxtable said, "The building itself is probably gonna be a complete loss. What you see standing is just kind of a shell."
