PARAMUS, NJ — A procession of sixty ambulances lined the street like a row of pearly, white teeth as they undertook the titanic task of moving 200 patients from The Valley Hospital in Ridgewood to the new, state-of-the-art facility in Paramus. Dr. Robert Brenner, then President of Valley Health, looked on as the patients were ferried away. The move had been a meticulous and exhausting process, but Brenner could not help feeling fascinated. “That was a once-in-a-lifetime experience for people in healthcare,” he reflected. “To move a hospital was unreal.” Throughout his career, Brenner has endeavored to turn every experience into an opportunity for learning. Perhaps it was that inquisitive spirit that led to him being promoted to Valley CEO, taking over for Audrey Meyers.
Brenner is a man who has worn many hats throughout his career as he continually searches for new experiences and new opportunities to learn. After he received his medical degree from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, he obtained his master’s degree from the Carnegie Mellon University-Heinz School of Public Policy and Management and completed the New York University Stern Strategic Leadership Program. He even served in the United States Air Force as a physician.
Even after being promoted to CEO, he is still a physician at heart. He is a common sight at The Valley Hospital, poking his head in on patients and asking how they are doing. He has a doctor’s passion for patient care that has endured in his career as an executive.
Therefore, one of his biggest goals as CEO is to continue finding ways of helping patients and upholding Valley’s long-standing reputation of excellence. That means imbuing the entire organization with the same thirst for knowledge that Brenner himself has. He wants to continue investing in medical education and is particularly excited about the hospital’s plan to take on 85 residents from Mt. Sinai over the next five years. “I spent time strengthening our relationship with Mt. Sinai,” he said. “It is something brand new for Valley, and it adds a nice dimension to what we are doing.”
The desire to innovate and advance patient care was also a driving force behind the new facility’s construction and the subsequent move, which Brenner was instrumental in planning underneath former CEO Audrey Meyers. Now, as CEO, he gets to reap the rewards of the taxing ordeal. With cutting-edge technological advancements, such as “Da Vinci” robotic surgery systems and AI patient monitoring, Brenner believes that the new hospital is better equipped to meet the high standard of patient care that he has strove for his entire career. “We want to advance the care that we are doing,” said Brenner. “We want to keep up with what is available technologically and clinically for our patients.” In pursuit of that, they have also hired a roster of new specialists, such as LGBTQ care, medical weight loss and LVAD experts.
It is all emblematic of what Brenner hopes will be the Valley of the future. Although he has swapped out a doctor’s scrubs for a suit and tie, continuing to innovate and educate about the best ways to provide patients with top notch healthcare remains Brenner’s top priority, and that will continue as long as he serves as the hospital’s CEO. “Valley’s future is very bright,” he concluded.
