NEW MEXICO (KRQE) – A Mexican gray wolf caught wandering around the state last year will be held through another breeding season in the hopes of helping the recovery of the species. The female wolf, known as Asha, has been caught north of I-40 twice, most recently in the Valles Caldera National Preserve in December.

U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service officials said Asha had wandered into territory where there are no other wolves to breed with which prompted her capture. They also said Asha has shown signs of bonding and breeding and they’re hoping to release them with pups depending on the outcome of the 2025 breeding season.

Some environmentalists said it would be better for Asha and the male wolf to roam.
