    • Minnesota Twins reliever Glen Perkins pitched a 1-2-3 ninth inning to pick up a save in front of hometown fans as the American League defeated the National League 5-3 in Major League Baseball’s All-Star Game, which was played at Target Field.
    • The Albert Lea Knights 13AAA baseball team took third place at the Slump Buster tournament that was held in Omaha. The team was coached by John Ball, Randy Andersen and Jesse Hernandez.
    • Minnesota Lynx forward Maya Moore was named the WNBA’s Western Conference Player of the Week for the second consecutive week after scoring a game high 32 points in the Lynx’ 93-82 win over the Tulsa Shock.
    • Taylor Thompson went 2-for-3 while scoring three runs as the Albert Lea U-18 softball team defeated NRHEG/Blooming Prairie 12-0 in the first game of a doubleheader. Albert Lea took the nightcap 15-0 behind the pitching of Hanna Schilling.

    20 years

    • The Albert Lea American Legion Post 56 baseball team defeated Glenville-Emmons 9-6 at Hayek Field. Ryan Truesdell went 3-for-4 with a double and four RBIs to lead Albert Lea. With the win, coach Matt Trygstad’s team was 4-14 on the summer.
    • Coach Bill Trygstad’s Albert Lea Colonels baseball team dropped to 2-12 on the summer as they fell 9-2 to the Rochester Blues at Hayek Field. Jay Link pitched 6 1/3 innings to take the loss.
    • The Albert Lea VFW Post 447 baseball team traveled to Rochester and were defeated by the Rochester Spartans 8-2. Aric Mattson took the loss, giving up eight earned runs over six innings while striking out five.
    • Jamie Kirsch of Albert Lea recorded her first career hole-in-one on the 115-yard first hole at the Clarks Grove Golf Course.

    50 years

    • Minnesota Twins manager Frank Quilici was on the receiving end of a punch from George Scott of the Milwaukee Brewers after an altercation between the two teams in the seventh inning after the Twins’ Ray Corbin beaned Bob Colluccio. The Twins went on to lose the game 5-4 with Dave Goltz taking the loss.
    • Dizzy Dean, a member of the St. Louis Cardinals’ “Gas House Gang” died of heart failure at the age of 63. The Hall of Famer won 150 games in his major league career.
    • Home runs by Dan Bellrichard, Tim Malepsy, Tim Neve and Ed Bellrichard lifted Wilson and Co. to a 10-6 win over First National Bank in National League youth baseball play.
    • Led by home runs from Brad Williamson, Tom Hanratty, Dave Long and Ron Holton, Harold’s Bar defeated Melody Bar 16-3 in men’s “A” league softball action.
    • Holiday Park in Hayward was giving away a case of 7-Up if you could hit a range ball into the 7-Up sign on their driving range.
    • Mark Blong continued his successful summer for the Albert Lea youth track and field club as he placed first in the 800-relay, first in the 60-low hurdles and third in the 100 and 440-yard runs for 11–12-year-olds at a meet in Rochester.
    • Steve Falk scored four goals and Dan Colstrup added three as the Golds defeated the Blues at the end of the second week of the Austin Youth Hockey School. Tim Colstrup hit the net twice for the Blues.
    • The Albert Lea VFW baseball team swept three games, defeating Owatonna and Austin twice to capture the west half of the District One Championship.
      Picking up wins in game one and two were Tony Richie and Dan Skogen. The team was set to play Winona to advance to the state tournament.

    Alumni update

    Recent Albert Lea High School graduate Aiden Hartman, who played varsity soccer for four years with the Tigers will be playing soccer this fall at Patrick Henry College in Purceville, Virginia.
