NEW MEXICO (KRQE) – A New Mexico man was sentenced for a “violent crime spree,” the US Department of Justice (DOJ) stated in a release.

The DOJ, citing documents, claimed Michael Shebala, 37, of Zuni, shot a man in the chest at the Route 66 Travel Center in February of 2021 because of an argument about face mask requirements. The victim had been traveling when he was shot and had to spend a week in the hospital.

The next month, Shebala reportedly shot his cousin during an argument before kicking him in the face and beating him with a bat.

Shebala was sentenced to 10 years and one day in federal prison and must serve three years of supervised release.
