Born on October 18, 1992, in Honolulu, Hawaii, John "John John" Florence is a renowned surfer who has made a significant impact on the sport. The 31-year-old athlete, standing at 6-foot-1, is set to make his second appearance at the Olympic Games in Paris 2024.

Florence was introduced to surfing by his mother, Alexandra , an avid surfer herself, at a very young age. Growing up in Hale’iwa, Oahu, with the famed Banzai Pipeline practically in his backyard, he quickly developed a natural affinity for the ocean and the sport. By the age of 13, he had entered the Triple Crown of Surfing, becoming the youngest surfer in the history of the event.

In 2011, Florence made it to the sport's premier competition, the World Surf League Championship Tour (CT). After narrowly missing out on the title in 2013, he finally achieved his goal in 2016 and retained his world crown the following year. Despite facing multiple injuries and an ACL rupture in 2019, Florence made a quick recovery and secured an Olympic berth just ahead of surfing legend Kelly Slater .

Florence's journey to the Olympics has not been without challenges. Just two and a half months ahead of the postponed Tokyo Games in 2021, he tore his ACL again. However, after an exceptionally quick recovery, he was passed fit to compete in the Japanese capital. Despite being eliminated in the last 16, Florence has managed to secure qualification for Paris 2024.

According to Olympics.com , Florence hopes to stay clear of injuries ahead of the competition at the iconic Teahupo'o in Tahiti. With a terrific season so far in the World Surf League, Florence looks poised to make a splash in his Olympic encore.
