The Dallas Cowboys have created their own chaos regarding Dak Prescott's contract situation with the team. The situation was already tumultuous, but on Friday, it took a step deeper into the unknown.
That step came from the Miami Dolphins and Green Bay Packers organizations when they extended their quarterbacks to massive deals. Tua Tagovailoa signed for $212.4 million, while Jordan Love signed for $220 million. Meanwhile, Dak Prescott was left twirling his thumbs at Cowboys training camp, waiting for his own contract to develop.
When speaking to the media , Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones made a promising statement if you are Prescott’s agent.
"I do not think this will be his last year with the Cowboys, at all. It's pretty clear, I think. I want to say it if it hasn't been clear, about how much we appreciate what Dak Prescott has meant to this team in a positive way."
He stressed his importance, he made it clear he wants him. What more could you ask for? Well, what Jones would say later in his press conference is where you wish he had stopped when he was ahead.
"Believe it or not, in my life, I've had a lot of things I wanted, that I couldn't get because I couldn't afford it."
Jerry Jones and the Cowboys have been the boogeyman in the NFL before, albeit that was mostly in the 90’s. Regardless, they are now seemingly cowering in fear of the modern NFL boogeyman, the salary cap.
Teams can make the salary cap real if they want to, while others can manage money in a fashion that George Clooney and Brad Pitt would say is something out of Ocean’s 11. Jones doesn’t need to rob a casino.
He just needs to be willing to pay franchise players to stay.
Dak Prescott is their offensive future. He is one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL. He knows what it is like to play without one of those. Fans remember the days of Quincy Carter, Chad Hutchison, and Drew Bledsoe. The pressure is on for Jones and the Cowboys, and they have no one to blame but themselves.
