Katie Ledecky , the most decorated female swimmer in Olympic history, finished third in the Women's 400-meter freestyle event, her first final event of the 2024 Paris Olympics , on Saturday (July 27).

Ledecky's official time was marked at 4:00.86, trailing Australia's Ariarne Titmus at 3:57.49 and Canada's Summer McIntosh at 3:58.37 to win bronze. Titmus fell 2.99 seconds short of matching the 400-meter freestyle world record of 3:55.38, which she set at the 2023 World Aquatics Championship.

Ledecky edged Titmus in the 400-meter heat earlier on Saturday, finishing in 4:02.19. McIntosh finished one tenth behind New Zealand's Erika Fairweather -- who finished fourth in the final -- in Heat 2.

Ledecky is seven-time Olympic and 21-time world championship gold medalist, which included winning gold in the women's 800-meter freestyle at the age of 15 during her international debut at the 2012 London Games, four gold medals, one silver and two world records at the 2016 Rio Games and two gold and two silver medals at the pandemic-delayed 2020 Tokyo Games.

Germany's Lukas Märtens won gold with a time of 3:41.78 in the men's 400-meter freestyle event, falling just short of breaking fellow countryman Paul Biedermann 's record of 3:40.07 set at the 2009 World Championships. Australia's Elijah Winnington finished at 3:42.21 for silver and South Korea's Kim Woo-min at 3:42.50 for bronze.
