MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Tenn. (WKRN) — After receiving dozens of animals this week, Montgomery County Animal Care and Control (MCACC) is urging pet owners to take steps that will help lower the number of strays in the community.

According to MCACC’s Facebook post from Saturday, July 27 , a total of 140 dogs and cats have entered the shelter since Monday, July 22, which is an average of 24 animals per day.

Not only did the shelter start Monday already housing more than 230 animals, but only 23 of the 140 new animals have been reclaimed, officials said.

MCACC encourages anyone who owns a dog or cat to do the following:

    • Microchip your pet.
    • Spay/neuter your pet.
    • Check your fences and secure your pet when outdoors.
    • If you’ve lost your pet, come to the shelter to see if furry friend is there. Also, post a picture on the local lost and found pet social media pages.

“There is no place for backyard breeding here in Montgomery County, we already have so many stray pets here at the shelter that need loving and caring homes,” MCACC wrote. “Please come down and visit us to find your furever family member.”

You can check out photos of the strays taken in by MCACC on the shelter’s Facebook page , as well as photos of the adoptable animals on the shelter’s website .

If you can’t adopt a pet or volunteer at the shelter, officials said there are other ways you can help. For example, share lost and found pet posts. You can also support local animal rescues, which all use cat food, dog food, treats, toys, blankets, cat litter, and towels.
