Man In Speedo Named 'Bob The Cap Catcher' Wins Hearts At Olympic Swim Competition

A seemingly regular guy in a speedo dived into the pool at the Paris Olympics swim competition Sunday and retrieved a competitor’s swim cap. He did it like he owned the place, and the crowd loved it. (Watch the video below.)

He now has a name, “Bob the Cap Catcher,” courtesy of NBC’s broadcast crew.

Bob plunged into worldwide fame by fetching the cap of U.S. swimmer Emma Weber after a 100-meter breaststroke heat at the Paris La Defense Arena, USA Today reported . He jumped in next to a starting block, snagged Weber’s flag-printed cap and swam under the lane markers to another side of the pool.

Exiting as if he belonged, he held up the rescued cap for the cheering crowd because heroes don’t always wear capes, or clothes, for that matter.

Weber finished eighth in the race , but her cap turned Bob into an instant legend.

HuffPost reached out to Paris Olympic officials for answers , and they provided one — the guy is a lifeguard.

“As the lifeguards are the only people in swimming gear, apart from the athletes, a request may be made to fetch an item at the bottom of the pool before the following session,” a representative told HuffPost. “In this case, the request was made to the lifeguard closest to the water line concerned.”
