One of Antonio Pierce's first moves as interim head coach for the Las Vegas Raiders last season was to take a gamble on a player who had been fired off his former team for off-the-field issues, as well as issues with the coaching staff, and a few other things.
It was a small one, but it eventually paid off big time. The Las Vegas Raiders grabbed cornerback Jack Jones from the waiver wire , and if he didn't play the way Pierce thought he could, then no big deal; he wasn't being paid much at all. If he did play the way Pierce thought, they would have a Pro Bowl-caliber cornerback.
I guess it's safe to say it worked out. Jones is still getting better, and he is already a really good player that the Raiders will use to build their secondary around. And, better yet - he's a Raider.
He fits the Raider way of old. And he's starting to look like he has the potential to be a top guy in this league at his position. He's easily the CB1 on the Raiders, but there are still a handful of people who don't believe in him. He has the confidence he needs.
He needed to have a big training camp heading into this season to start the process of proving everyone wrong. So far, he has not only done that but has been one of the standouts of camp so far.
According to beat writers and reporters with boots on the ground out in Southern California, he has been one of the best defensive players during camp, outside of the two obvious ones in Christian Wilkins and Maxx Crosby.
According to Logan Reever, he had a period where he had three straight pass breakups on the two best wide receivers - Jakobi Meyers and Davante Adams.
Jones has been lethal during camp, and it's not like it's been up against some of the lesser guys in the wide receiver room. He's going at and winning reps against the best.
