NFL head coaches will be required to do ‘live’ in-game interviews this season

Get ready to hear more from NFL coaches during the course of a game in 2024.

Among the 2,506 pages of the Sunday Ticket trial transcript, Pro Football Talk discovered that NFL coaches will be required to give interviews during the game, which had not been the case in years past.

Previously coaches could choose to speak with sideline reporters going into the locker room at halftime or coming out after the break, but it was never a requirement.

That now appears to be set to change, Cathy Yancy, the NFL’s V.P. of broadcasting rights, policies, and compliance testified.

“This year, we have a new policy going into effect where all of the clubs are going to have to make a head coach available live for an interview during the game,” Yancy said, according to Pro Football Talk. “Each team has to provide a head coach; one in the first half, one in the second half. And that’s for all teams, and it’s available for all TV partners.”

The reasoning for the change was pretty straightforward.

Yancy claimed that “it’s good for the broadcast, it’s good for the fans.”

“Fans want to be closer to the game, they want to get to know the players and the coaches. It’s very important that they kind of have that relationship, and they want to hear,” she testified. “It’s really good sound. If you’re a football fan or even if you’re a casual fan, it’s great to hear from the coaches. There’s a lot of emotion.”

Just how forthcoming coaches will be will ultimately reveal how worthwhile the interview are for the television audience tuning in.

It could make for some very good television when a team is losing big or a big play just happened and a coach has to talk to a sideline reporter right after.
