Editor's Picks #5: Top Ski News From Last Week
By Matt Lorelli,
I went skiing last week at Timberline on Mt. Hood, Oregon, and it's all I can think about.
The feeling of sliding (surprisingly) fast on the July snowpack was more than enough to pull me out of summer mode, and drop me right into winter. Unfortunately, I'll have to wait a few more months before winter actually gets here.
In the meantime, the team here at POWDER is dedicated to keeping you informed on what's going on in the world of skiing, no matter the season. Check out our best stories from last week, July 22-July 28, 2024.
5. Pennsylvania's Largest Ski Resort Announces Millions in Snowmaking Upgrades
Synopsis: Pennsylvania's ski industry is reliant on snowmaking, and the state's largest ski resort by vertical drop, Blue Mountain, has invested heavily in upgrading their world-class snowmaking system for years to come.
Editor's Thoughts: Ah. Snowmaking. A necessary evil that millions of skiers rely on each winter for fun. As a kid from Delaware, I learned to find joy in the sound of snow guns cranking and frozen particles of ice on my goggles. Snowmaking meant the season would continue despite Mother Nature's best efforts. Kudos to the team at Blue Mountain for investing in the future of the resort.
4. Snowbasin, Utah Selected As 2034 Olympic Downhill Skiing Venue
Synopsis: The Winter Olympics are returning to Salt Lake City in 2034, and Snowbasin Resort will once again welcome the world's best downhill skiers.
Editor's Thoughts: Allowing the public to access the Grizzly Downhill at Snowbasin Resort is a real treat. The course isn't regularly groomed as it will be leading up to the Olympics, but it's fun to imagine downhill skiers tucking for speed on the steep pitch. Go try it out for yourself before 2034. You have ten years...!
Synopsis: The mountain town of Jasper, Canada was largely destroyed by three wildfires that conjoined to form a devastating blaze last week. Nearly 50% of the buildings and homes have been destroyed.
Editor's Thoughts: Our hearts are reeling for our friends in the Jasper community. Stay tuned in at POWDER as we provide updates throughout the week on the Jasper fires.
2. Schweitzer, Idaho Ends Land Lease with Selkirk Powder
Synopsis: Backcountry ski outfit Selkirk Powder has been ousted by Schweitzer heading into the Winter '24/'25 season. Selkirk will operate in a new zone for future operations.
Editor's Thoughts: It's great to see Ken Barrett and the folks over at Selkirk Powder make lemonades out of lemons. Read the full story for details.
1. How Aaron Fox Skied 200 Days After Shattering His Femoral Neck
Synopsis: Professional skier Aaron Fox "obliterated" his femoral neck, the bone that connects the femur to the hip, while skiing in Jackson Hole. This is the story of how Fox bounced back, and logged the longest season of his life.
Editor's Thoughts: Logging 200+ days in a season with a steak of 160 days is impressive, but doing so the year after breaking the femoral neck is unprecedented. Aaron Fox hasn't received the shine he's deserved over the years, but there's no doubt he's one of the most passionate skiers out there.
