FOXBOROUGH, Mass - The New England Patriots took the field on Monday for the first time in pads, but practice was definitely not what the offense wanted.

Drake Maye struggled a bit, while Jacoby Brissett had some flashes of brilliance. And he further made it clear that as things stands right now, he is the starter for the Patriots.

On the field, it was a very traditional practice. But off the field there was a lot going on.

So let's get into the takeaways from Day 5 of training camp, starting with Brissett.

    1. QB1 is clear

Brissett was by far the best quarterback on the field during practice, and his statistics truly proved that.

The veteran quarterback went 8-for-9 in 11s and then went 4-for-6 in 7s. It was his best day since training camp began.

And it was highlighted by some top throws to Patriots receivers during the drills. (We'll get more into those later).

As for Maye, he went 1-for-5 in 11s and 2-for-6 in 7s, which included an interception.

Joe Milton and Bailey Zappe only got reps in the 11s period.

    Milton : 4/5
    Zappe : 3/4

    2. Drew Rosenhaus was in attendance

Defensive tackle Davon Godchaux has not been quiet about his desire for a new contract. But as of right now, nothing has been done.

However, Drew Rosenhaus, Godchaux's agent, was at Gillette Stadium on Sunday and was seen having conversations with very important members of the Patriots staff. He spoke with director of player personnel Matt Groh for a long time, and at one point, executive vice president of football business Robyn Glaser joined in.

Following practice, Rosenhaus and Godchaux spoke with head coach Jerod Mayo.

So maybe a deal is getting close to being done.

    3. Matthew Judon is clearly upset

While one player appeared (maybe) a bit closer to getting a deal done, the other one seems far.

Along with Godchaux, linebacker Matthew Judon wants a new deal and has made that very clear when speaking with reporters.

Judon came out on the field, but was not in uniform and did not have pads on. He had his daily game of catch with the fans, but when it was time for the stretch period to begin, Judon just sat there and watched.

At one point, Mayo walked over to the linebacker and the conversation did not appear to go well based on a video from NBC Sports Boston.

He then had a conversation with Eliot Wolf and Matt Groh, but that ended with him walking away.

It seems we might have a hold in.

    4. Barmore update

The Patriots announced on Sunday that Christian Barmore was diagnosed with blood clots and was treated by doctors at Mass General Brigham.

On Monday, Mayo provided an update on Barmore.

"I just want to thank the medical professionals in-house and also Mass General as far as the care for [Christian] Barmore. Obviously, it's an unfortunate thing, but for me, it's not even about football. When you talk about things like that, it's about the man. He's getting tremendous care, and I'm anticipating him coming back," Mayo said.

As for when Barmore might return, Mayo's not sure.

"No timetable. I think all these situations are different, and I'm not a specialist in that world, so I don't want to put a diagnosis or a timetable to come back. When he's ready to go, we'll be here waiting for him," he added.

David Andrews was diagnosed with blood clots in his lungs back in 2019 and missed the entire season. So the staff weren't willing to take any chances.

"I remember when that whole thing happened. The same training staff, for the most part, that dealt with that are still here. I have full confidence in those guys to help him out. I'm sure at some point in time, you've got to remember this just happened, not too long ago. He's still trying to digest what's going on right now as well, and as well as his treatment plan," Mayo said.

"We have these case managers who are responsible for a group of guys, and they did a great job under Jim's [Whalen] leadership. Chris Dolan noticed something, and they investigated it. Kudos to those guys," Mayo added.

Mayo also said that Barmore is no longer in the hospital and that he spoke with him.

    5. Kyle Dugger gets another interception

That's one more interception for Dugger this training camp.

While he snagged the ball from Jacoby Brissett on Day 1, Sunday was Drake Maye's turn to experience the dominance from the safety.

Dugger snagged the ball out of the air on a short pass from Drake Maye that was behind Mitchell Wilcox.

    6. Jabrill Peppers injury

Shortly after the start of practice, Jabrill Peppers was seen with athletic trainers and was walking gingerly. He did rejoin the safeties on the field, but didn't truly finish practice.

    6. Where was David Andrews?

There was only one other player besides Barmore who was missing from action on Monday.

Center and captain David Andrews was not spotted at practice, so it was Nick Leverett who was mainly taking snaps at center with the "starting" offensive line.

    7. First ejection of training camp

Josh Uche was booted from training camp, marking the first player to be ejected due to fighting this year.

It appeared like he was arguing with right tackle Chukwuma Okorafor and even seemed to throw a punch.

    8. Play of the Day

Javon Baker had the play of the day once again, hauling in a deep ball from Brissett over Alex Austin and Jaylinn Hawkins.
