ESCAMBIA COUNTY, Fla. ( WKRG ) — Caution tape outlined the pavilion at the Wedgewood Community Center on Monday.

The center is closed indefinitely after a shooting left two people dead and five people injured including an 11-year-old boy on Sunday night.

“This is a sad day for Escambia County,” Escambia County District 3 Commissioner Lumon May said. “Not just for the Marie Young or the Wedgewood Neighborhood Association, not just for District 3, but for all of Escambia County when you have seven people, an 11-year-old innocent child shot, two young men laid to rest.”

Investigators said the shooting happened during a dice game in the pavilion area. A men’s basketball game was also underway inside the center when the shooting occurred.

Deputies are now looking to identify three suspects pictured in surveillance video. Investigators believe the three got out of a stolen white Hyundai and began firing.

The sheriff’s office said the vehicle was recovered near Dunaway Lane.

    LOCATION:

Escambia County Sheriff Chip Simmons is asking for people with information about the shooting to come forward.

“Let’s talk about the fact that there’s a mother that would not let her child talk to law enforcement,” Simmon said. “That was there. There’s a witness in this situation, and they would not let them talk to law enforcement.”

County Commissioner Lumon May said community centers are supposed to be safe havens…

“It’s for children who come from single family homes,” May said. “It’s for children who are plagued by violence, that they expect to come on a Sunday on God’s day to come into a community center to be safe.”

May said the county will look into whether proper security protocol was followed at the community center.
