On Monday morning's episode of ESPN's First Take , Marcus Spears described Simone Biles as "Unreal" when asked about her performance at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games.
The 27-year-old gymnast suddenly had her Paris hopes in jeopardy after she appeared to suffer a rough landing during floor warmups, which caused some calf discomfort. However, she powered through the discomfort to qualify for the finals in three of the four apparatuses, including the individual all-around and team finals.
When asked how impressive Biles' accomplishment was on Sunday after suffering an injury, Spears was in awe of the perseverance that she displayed during the competition.
"It's unreal," Spears answered. "They interviewed the coach for Team USA Gymnastics and asked about Simone [Biles] and her injury, and I want people to have a full comprehension of how hard it is what she's doing with a calf injury. It's all explosiveness."
Despite the injury to her calf, Biles had an impressive qualifying performance on Sunday. She earned a score of 14.600 on the floor, 15.3 on the vault, which included a 9.4 execution score, 14.733 on the beam, and 14.433 on the uneven bars. Overall, Biles earned an all-around score of 59.566, which ranked as the No. 1 individual score throughout the meet.
Spears continued by praising Biles' longevity in the sport and stated that he believes she is one of the top athletes in American history.
"Because it doesn't come around often, right? We don't really love this true greatness until we get to this point in the Olympics. But more importantly, to be in it [gymnastics] for this long and doing it at this level with all that she's going through... Simone Biles is arguably one of the top five... Top ten greatest athletes in American history when you start talking about her craft and what she's been able to accomplish."
Biles and Team USA will compete in the team all-around on NBC on July 30 at 12:15 p.m. (ET), with the individual medal competitions occurring on various days this week.
