Luzerne County kid turns lemons into lemonade for good cause

DURYEA, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Turning lemons into lemonade and serving it up for a good cause is the goal of one Luzerne County youngster.

This is Avery Deitrick’s fifth year hosting a lemonade stand. This year, she’s raising money for Griffin Pond Animal Shelter.

Her stand also featured hot dogs, tie-dyed shirts, baked goods, popcorn, chips, snacks, and new this year, a raffle!

Why she does this year after year is simple.

“I just have some of my friends work it and we rotate around the stands and we do it because we like to support the animals because sometimes it’s really hard for the shelters,” Avery said.

At Griffin Pond Animal Shelter, the fundraiser recipient, the staff says that Avery is an exceptional human being.

“She’s just an amazing you know human being that thinks about the homeless pets here in northeast Pennsylvania and we’re so horned and gifted to be able to receive that donation from Avery when she does her lemonade stand every year,” said Griffin Pond Animal Shelter development director Sherry Crolly.

28/22 News was there when Avery presented a check for more than $2,300 to the shelter.

“The money that we receive and donations like this goes to spaying and neutering, vaccines, food, if they need medical attention, it helps with those costs here at the shelter,” said Crolly.

“I know the animals are gonna need it because it’s really hard especially during a time of year like this when it’s hot and they’re really packed right now so any bit of money I know it’s gonna really help them,” Avery added.

It’s no surprise Avery says she wants to be a veterinarian.
