Fans on social media are roasting NFL running back Rashaad Penny after the longtime Seahawk announced his retirement on Tuesday morning.

The reaction stems not from his early retirement at age 28, but from the timing of his announcement, which followed a bold statement he made just days earlier.

The backlash began after Penny declared just a few days before his retirement that he considered himself one of the best running backs in the league, a statement many thought was controversial due to the fact he has never rushed for over 1,000 yards in a season.

"I think everybody else knows that when I’m healthy, I’m probably, like, a top running back in the league," Penny told Mike Kaye of the Charlotte Observer last Friday.

Now, just days later, Penny isn’t just off the list of top running backs—he's no longer in the league at all.

"Bro really said he was one of the best when healthy," said one fan.

"Thought bro was the top back in the league?," said another.

Penny enjoyed a solid college and NFL career. At San Diego State, he led the nation in rushing yards in his senior year with 2,248 yards, which earned him the 27th overall pick in the 2018 NFL draft by the Seattle Seahawks.

Over five seasons with Seattle, Penny established himself as one of the league's better bruising backs.

While Penny's achievements in both college and the NFL are remarkable, the timing of his recent bold claim and his sudden retirement is less than ideal.

Some believe his retirement might be linked to his reluctance to play for the struggling Carolina Panthers, while others point to the injuries that have plagued his career. Regardless of the reasons, it’s clear that Penny is officially moving on.
