49ers RB Christian McCaffrey Makes History With ‘Madden’ Rating

San Francisco 49ers running back Christian McCaffrey is the cover athlete of “Madden 25,” so it’s only fitting that the star runner joins the game’s exclusive 99 Club.

In doing so, McCaffrey becomes the first 49ers running back to attain a rating of 99 overall in any “Madden” game. He’s just the fifth 49ers player to achieve the milestone, joining Hall of Fame linebacker Patrick Willis ( 2011 ), HOF receiver Terrell Owens ( 2004 ), offensive tackle Trent Williams (2023), and linebacker Ken Norton Jr. (1999).

Hall of Fame receiver Jerry Rice achieved the now-defunct 100 overall rating in the game’s early days when ratings higher than 99 were given.

It’s hard to argue against McCaffrey being rated anything other than a 99 following his breakout 2023 season in which he led the NFL in yards from scrimmage (2,023) and rushing yards (1,459) and finished tied for the most total touchdowns (21). He was also named a First Team All-Pro and AP NFL Offensive Player of the Year.

“Madden 25” is scheduled to hit shelves on Aug. 16.
