    Philippines at the Olympics: Kayla Sanchez sets a new record

    Kayla Sanchez set a new national record in the women's 100 meter freestyle and advanced to the semifinals after finishing with a time of 53.67 seconds in the 2024 Paris Olympics .

    The 23-year old Filipina, finished fourth in her heat, 0.65 seconds behind the winner Bernadette Haughey of Hong Kong. This mark was the 10th best among the 32 swimmers and Sanchez broke her own previous record of 54.25 seconds.

    She will aim to crack the top eight of the semifinals later at 3:25 AM PHT to continue with her medal bid for the Philippines.

    Meanwhile, Filipina rower Joanie Delgaco's hopes to deliver a medal in the Olympics came to an end in the women's single sculls quarterfinals.

    After topping the repechage Sunday, she placed last in Heat 3 with a time of 7:58.30. Delgaco raced reigning Olympic gold medalist Emma Twigg of New Zealand and a number of European champions in her heat.

    She is now relegated to the semifinals C/D for placing purposes, which is slated to occur Wednesday at 4:14 PM PHT.

    Another setback for the Philippines came in the Round of 32 of the women's 63 kg judo, with Kiyome Watanabe suffering a 0-10 defeat against China's Jing Tang. The match was short lived, lasting less than a minute, as the Chinese scored an Ippon to end the match.

    For the nightcap, 2020 Olympics silver medalist Nesthy Petecio will start her campaign in the women's 57 kg versus India's Jaismine Lamboria in the Round of 32 at 11:54 PM PHT. Eumir Marcial will also debut in Paris against Turabek Khabibullaev of Uzbekistan at 3:04 AM PHT.
