    Multiple rounds of severe storms for central Iowa Tuesday

    Two rounds of severe thunderstorms impacted Central Iowa on Tuesday. The first round arrived with a complex of storms that moved into Western Iowa from Nebraska after 1 AM. This first round crossed the Metro around 2:45 AM.

    The second round of severe storms developed from storms that formed near Sioux Falls around 4 AM this morning. That storm hit the Des Moines Metro around 9:45 AM and progressed across Southeast Iowa through late morning.

    Rainfall overnight Monday through 7 AM Tuesday were not overly impressive, as the storm system moved quickly across the state. All totals were under 1 inch. Here are some of the 7 AM Rainfall Totals:

    • Clive 0.94″
    • Adel 0.92″
    • Norwalk 0.85″
    • Des Moines Airport 0.62″
    • Waukee 0.56″
    • Osceola 0.48″
    • Ottumwa 0.38″
    • Ames 0.25″

    These two rounds of storms will not be the last to move through Iowa. An Enhanced risk area for severe storms is already highlighted for Central Iowa for late Tuesday night and into Wednesday morning.

    Storms will begin to develop along a warm front that stretches from eastern Nebraska across Iowa in the early morning hours of Wednesday. The low level jet will increase during the night providing the fuel to get the storms building. The storms will coalesce into a complex of storms and begin moving east through the early morning. They may produce damaging winds as they do so.

    Damaging winds are the primary threat with the overnight storms from Tuesday to Wednesday.
