2024 marks the dawn of a new era for the New England Patriots . The team opted to part ways with the legendary Bill Belichick, hiring Jerod Mayo to take over as head coach.

For the first time since 1999, the Patriots have a head man on the sideline who isn’t Bill Belichick. Jerod Mayo knows what is expected of him as he played under Belichick during his NFL career and has been on the New England coaching staff since 2019.

Getting the franchise back on track will take a little while. Since Tom Brady left as a free agent in 2020, the team has made the postseason only once.

The 2023 campaign was one of the least productive in franchise history, which led to some of the major changes. Jerod Mayo and Eliot Wolf in the front office are tasked with rebuilding the foundation of the roster so that the team can return to prominence.

Mayo has an incredible source that he can get information from in Belichick. He is one of the greatest head coaches the NFL has ever seen, but he revealed a somewhat surprising update recently during an interview.

Jerod Mayo made an appearance on Up and Adams with Kay Adams and was asked about whether or not he has reached out to Bill Belichick since getting the job. Mayo revealed there hasn’t been much talking between the two, but that he did learn a lot from his former head coach.

“We haven’t had a lot of communication. I learned a lot from Bill… but it’s a different time, it’s a different era and hopefully we can have that same success,” Mayo said while speaking to Adams at Patriots training camp.

That is certainly a response that will surprise some Patriots fans. But, Jerod Mayo does make a legitimate point. For him to succeed, he needs to carve out his own path, not try to emulate what Bill Belichick did.

That is an issue that others from the Belichick coaching tree before Mayo have had. They tried to copy and remake the Patriots Way elsewhere, but were missing two key factors; Bill Belichick and Brady.

Mayo will attempt to make a name for himself, hitching his wagon to Drake Maye, the No. 3 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. If he can live up to expectations, the Patriots will be back in the playoff picture in no time.
