This story has been updated to include information on detours and lifted shelter-in-place orders.

Residents around mile marker 88 westbound on the Ohio Turnpike were asked on Monday to evacuate or shelter in place because of a semi-tractor trailer tanker fire with hazardous chemicals.

An EMA emergency text message and phone alert was sent to residents of Rice Township asking they to shelter in place, but it was lifted around 6:15 p.m. on Monday.

"Some have been evacuated and some are being told to shelter in place," Emergency Management Agency Director Lisa Keulling texted from the location west of Ohio 53.

Troopers from the Ohio State Highway Patrol and first responders are on scene at the commercial vehicle fire. The fire started at about 4 p.m. on Monday.

"No injuries have been reported. The scene is active with multiple fire departments on scene," Highway Patrol spokesman Sgt. Ryan Purpura said. "As of 6:32, the fire is out."

Purpura said the semi-tractor-trailer was carrying Organic Peroxide.

Detours were established, but have also been lifted. Firetrucks were on the site.

Someone to know: Not a person, but the Citizen Alert System

The Emergency Management Agency was called in, as one of the 11 agencies involved in the semi-tractor trailer tanker fire on the Ohio Turnpike Monday afternoon. It was loaded with 32,100 pound of hazardous chemicals. Lisa Kuelling wears several hats in the county, but yesterday it was as Director of the Emergency Management Agency. She was active, on the scene, as the chemical fire burned.

Q: Who sent out the warnings for evacuation and sheltering-in-place?

A: Technically, it was the Sandusky County Sheriff's Office dispatchers, but it went out on our text and phone County Citizen's Alert System. I authorized it and decided that it should be a county-wide notice, instead of just Rice Township, because there could have been someone working, asleep, or otherwise unaware, that could have been warned by a local friend or family member in the county.

How does a person sign up for that service?

It's very simple. Just go to www.sanduskycountyoh.gov and scroll down to almost the bottom of that webpage, until you see the blue highlighted link for "Sign up for County Citizens Alert System." Follow that link and enter your contact information. There is a choice to receive a phone call or text message.

I understand it sends out warnings for a wide variety of emergencies, what are some of them, and what was the danger on Monday?

The system notifies residents about immanent threats to health, safety or for important community alerts, such as severe weather, floods, gas leaks and police activity . In this case, the initial danger is that organic peroxide, when combined with any kind of heat source: spark, flame, anything like that, can explode. It's explosive, but when it's burning, and it's in the air, it's off-gassing a toxic fume... It is a nasty chemical, when you have it burning.
