SULLIVAN COUNTY, Tenn. (WJHL) — The Animal Shelter of Sullivan County announced Tuesday that it has closed its intake of animals.

The shelter announced on social media that, effective Monday, it could not accept any more animals.

“Unfortunately, this year has been incredibly hard on shelters and rescues in the area,” the social media post states. “Adoptions are slow or nonexistent, and our rescue partners are also full.”

Shelter leadership said the kennels are completely at capacity.

The Animal Shelter of Sullivan County asked people to help share adoptable animals on their own social media platforms, volunteer for adoption events and offer to foster animals. The shelter also asked county residents to post photos of any stray animals that are found to other groups, and the shelter will help get the word out in the hopes of locating owners.

The shelter also asked dog owners to make sure their dogs are secured and have either proper identification or a microchip.
