OHIO COUNTY, W.Va. (WTRF) – It’s a great way to serve your country and gain valuable knowledge of our election process.

Now Ohio County officials are asking for your help in making sure the November elections are run in a safe and secure environment.

This Thursday, August 1st is National Poll Worker Recruitment Day.

It’s a day intended to encourage election day volunteers and address a national poll worker shortage.

Here at home, a sign-up event will take place at the Ohio County Library. There will be two sessions. They will be between noon and 2:00pm, with the 2nd from 5:30pm to 7:30pm.

Volunteers will be asked to fulfill a number of roles on election day.

“The election can’t happen without poll workers. there is a state mandate of a minimum of 5 poll workers at each precinct and Ohio County currently has 36 precincts. That being said, we also need back ups and alternates. We also need runners to pick up and drop off equipment and supplies throughout the day.”

Erin Witchey. Ohio County Election Coordinator

To be a poll worker, you must be registered to vote in your county, be able to read and write the English language, attend training and be available to work throughout Election Day.

Also you can not be a candidate in the current election or a close relative of a candidate.

If you can’t make it Thursday, you can click on this link to sign up .
