Robert Saleh's preseason plan for New York Jets QB Aaron Rodgers

It's becoming rarer than ever to see a starting quarterback taking snaps in an NFL Preseason game.

Prior to quarterbacking two possessions for the New York Jets in their 2023 preseason finale, Aaron Rodgers hadn't seen live game action in August since 2018. This year, the 40-year-old Rodgers will most likely remain on the sideline during the Jets' three scheduled summertime tune-ups.

"My instinct is no, but I want to leave it open," said fourth-year head coach Robert Saleh on Tuesday when asked about the plan for Rodgers.

New York opens preseason play with a home game against the Washington Commanders on August 10 followed by a visit to the Carolina Panthers on August 17. Although he won't dress for either of those dates, Rodgers could potentially take a limited number on snaps in Preseason Game No. 3.

"That third game is the one where we're deciding. He definitely won't play the first two, but the discussion on the third one we just haven't quite had yet," said Saleh.

The Jets will close out the summer schedule with their annual exhibition against the New York Giants on August 24 at MetLife Stadium. Rodgers played in this game last year, finishing 5-of-8 passing for 47 yards and a 14-yard first-quarter scoring strike to Garrett Wilson.

Rodgers, a four-time NFL MVP, last saw live game reps in the 2023 season opener, logging four snaps before tearing his Achilles. He returned to practice in December but remained inactive on gamedays.
