New York Giants' latest move means a former first-round pick has officially run out of chances

A former first-round pick by the New York Giants is about to face a tough reality. Evan Neal was selected as a top ten pick to be a cornerstone offensive tackle for New York. That simply has not come to fruition.

Now, the Giants are moving on - to a degree, according to Jordan Raanan.

Evan Neal not expected to start at tackle for the Giants in 2024

Neal was, simply put, horrific as a starting OT last year for New York. He received one of the lowest PFF grades in the NFL with a measly 39.8 via Pro Football Focus.

That was actually a decline from his 44.1 grade in 2022, another rough, rough grade for the young tackle. Neal has not yet turned 24 years old. He's still quite young, but at some point, you must draw a line.

After two seasons of struggle, the Giants are turning to veteran tackle Jermaine Eluemunor.

He was a solid lineman last season and nabbed a 68.7 grade via PFF. He's a proven pro tackle, and New York simply must have that in front of Daniel Jones in 2024.

Projected starting OL for 2024 Giants

    • LT Andrew Thomas
    • LG Jon Runyan Jr.
    • C John Michael Schmitz
    • RG Greg Van Roten
    • RT Jermaine Eluemunor

They signed Van Roten on Tuesday morning after a meeting last week.

Van Roten is 34 years old. The veteran lineman spent last year with the Raiders — where he was coached by now-Giants offensive line coach Carmen Bricillo. That's a major connection.

He started all 17 games for Las Vegas and played 98 percent of the team’s offensive snaps in 2023. He was available and consistent. The Giants could use more of both of those traits along their 2024 offensive line. -- A to Z Sports

All in all, New York is going the veteran route on their OL. If an injury does pop up, Neal could see some action. The Giants probably hope it does not come to that based on this decision, though.
