South County Health announces hematology oncologist hirings following resignations

SOUTH KINGSTOWN — South County Health, a large health care system in Washington County, is hiring three new hematology oncologist physicians following recent resignations from its cancer center, according to Chief Medical Officer Kevin Charpentier.

“All new physicians will be added to our medical staff following applicable policy and procedure. This deployment intends to ensure all cancer center patients have continuity in their care,” Charpentier said in a statement provided to The Providence Journal Tuesday afternoon.

In late June, Charpentier announced the resignation of South County Health’s hematology oncology providers. “Chronic underfunding of the health care delivery system” was given as the root cause of the resignations, which seems to have led to internal conflict over how to address South County Health’s financial situation.

Charpentier clarified that not all physicians from the cancer center resigned and that none of those who have resigned – whose employment will end early to mid-October – have requested for their privileges to practice as physicians at South County Health to be terminated.

“Our medical staff listings will be updated if or when changes to medical staff privileging occur,” Charpentier said.

The new hematology oncology physicians are scheduled to start at South County Health’s Cancer Center between Sept. 18 and Oct. 14.
