The new program makes it easier to fuel up and park.

An innovative way to save time using E-ZPass is coming to the First State.

Delaware is now one of 19 states in the Driven by E-ZPass non-toll program called PayByCar, which was part of a 2022 pilot PayByCar launched in 27 gas stations in Massachusetts.

It involves car tags, which will be used for on-arrival vehicle identification only.

Then, parking fees and gas purchases are charged to whatever payment card or wallet the member provides when signing up for the service and are not charged to a user’s toll account.

At gas stations, PayByCar users simply pay by confirming a text message when they drive into a participating location, without needing to open their wallet or touch the keypad to enter PINS on the fuel dispenser.

On the cleanliness side, it eliminates multiple points of touching a public surface, and the process also cuts transaction time in half and automatically provides a digital receipt directly to the user’s phone.

    Useful for fuel

PJ Wilkins, executive director at E-ZPass Group and IAG Service Corporation, said it’s appropriate that the E-ZPass tag, the original in-vehicle payment solution, should also be useful for non-toll payments like fuel and parking.

The program was developed by the E-ZPass Interagency Group , the world’s largest and most widely integrated toll network, and PayByCar Inc. , the mobile payments startup responsible for providing pay-by-text payments at gas stations and parking facilities.

With the expansion of the program, drivers of almost 55 million vehicles with E-ZPass tags and transponders can benefit from the low-touch mobile payment solution.

“The drivers of 55 million vehicles with E-ZPass tags already know how seamless paying for tolls is,” stated Kevin Condon, founder and chief executive officer at PayByCar. “We are determined to bring that simplicity to all the other payments made on the go.”

Delaware is in the thick of the other 18 states in the program, making it beneficial for First Staters traveling throughout the state and through state lines.

It joins neighbors New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Maryland, as well as Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Maine, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New Hampshire, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Rhode Island, Virginia and West Virginia.

“We are also drivers so we know how frustrating it can be downloading multiple apps and wallets and then searching for them when you need to make a quick purchase,” Condon stated, “managing paper receipts, losing tickets in parking garages, or risking identity theft from transactions where card skimming results in millions of dollars in losses each year.”
