    Two California women found with 35 pounds of meth in Union County, charged: Sheriff

    UNION COUNTY, N.C. ( QUEEN CITY NEWS ) — Two California women have been charged in Union County after a traffic stop led to the recovery of 35 pounds of methamphetamine, according to the Union County Sheriff’s Office.

    On July 23, 29-year-old Renee Rubio and 44-year-old Joanne Ortega were arrested and booked into the Union County Detention Center under $5 million bonds. They face multiple charges including:

    • Felony trafficking in methamphetamine
    • Felony conspiracy to commit trafficking in methamphetamine
    • Felony maintaining a vehicle/dwelling/place for controlled substances

    Sheriff’s K-9 ‘Cody’ was alerted to narcotics inside the vehicle, which led to the discovery of approximately 35 pounds of methamphetamine, officials said.

    “This extremely successful interdiction operation is a testament to the dedication and hard work of our detectives, deputies, and K-9 teams. My office remains committed to combating drug trafficking and keeping our community safe by proactively seeking out and apprehending traffickers who prey upon those suffering from substance abuse addiction,” Sheriff Eddie Cathey said.
