Evacuation orders issued because of 32,100 pounds of hazardous materials in a truck fire

I spent a deal of Tuesday going over details about that Ohio Turnpike truck fire that happened on Monday evening. I am hoping to have more details in the coming weeks, because of the toxic nature of the hazmat situation .

Sandusky Township Fire Chief Dean Schneider was the incident commander.

“When I left work, I could see the black smoke, so that thing was rocking and rolling,” Schneider said. “There were some unknowns, and I’d rather err on the side of caution.”

Among the unknowns were how melting aluminum, diesel fuel and the 32,100 pounds of organic peroxide might interact, and how one keeps the public safe.

“The more I thought about evacuating, now we’re making people go outside and are we going to expose them even further, but if we have them shelter-in-place, is that a better option? That’s when I decided that if with the shelter-in-place that if they weren’t in that immediate smoke, and direction of travel it was going, it was probably the better option, to keep them indoors, to eliminate them being in the smoke itself,” Schneider said.

He was also concerned about onlookers on County Road 109, standing outside their vehicles. They also closed down that road and made people move, because of possible smoke inhalation.

Authorities were quite frank with me. Read the rest of what I had here .

The Fourth Annual Chasing Jami Memorial 5K — GLOW/COLOR Run will be Friday evening, Aug. 3 in Rodger Young Park in Fremont.

Runners and walkers will follow the glow lit path while getting blasted with color. This messy but fun run is in honor of Jami Toeppe Raubenolt, who lost her battle with glioblastoma brain cancer in February 2021, according to a press release.

Raubenolt was an avid runner. All proceeds for this race will benefit Pontifex, Inc., a local non-profit in Fremont.

The organization feeds the hungry with a weekly food pantry, and two soup kitchens — one at 4 p.m. Tuesdays and 11 a.m. Fridays and it also offers showers for those in need.

Race starts at 8 p.m. for walkers and 8:15 p.m. for runners. Participants must pre-register to be guaranteed a T-shirt.

To sign, visit https://raceroster.com/events/2024/90086/chasing-jami-memorial-5k . Participants may also register at Pontifex,416 W. State St., or on race day.
