Men's basketball: Three takeaways from Germany vs. Brazil

On Tuesday, Germany showcased why it is the current world champion with an 86-73 win over Brazil. The Germans have now won both of their opening games at the Paris Olympics and look like genuine challengers to finish with a medal at the end of the tournament.

Here are three takeaways from Germany's latest win.

1. Franz Wagner's three-point struggles are real

Wagner went 0-for-6 from three-point range against Brazil. He went 2-for-8 against Japan on July 27. Overall, the Orlando Magic star is hitting 14% of his attempts from the perimeter. Wagner struggled to hit his perimeter shots throughout the 2023-24 NBA season, and now, with a shorter three-point line, those issues are being amplified.

Considering his diverse skillset and clear upside as an All-NBA talent in the future, Wagner's recent struggles are perplexing. It may take some off-season work to fix whatever is happening with his shooting stroke. Nevertheless, he still has enough talent and skill to be a major factor in Germany's chances of success.

2. Germany's defense is stifling

In Germany's opening two games, it has held opponents to under 80 points. Brazil only had two players get into double-digit scoring despite gaining advantage on the glass and in secondary points. Germany has diverse talents at every position. The German's can switch on the perimeter and funnel ball handlers toward a dropping big.

It will be interesting to see how the defense holds up when facing a team like the USA or France, though.

3. Dennis Schroder looks unstoppable

Schroder finished the game with 20 points, six assists, three rebounds and four steals. He shot 7-of-13 from the field. His ability to take his game to another level when playing on the international stage continues to astound. Germany will undoubtedly continue increasing his offensive role as it progresses in the tournament, especially once facing more half-court heavy teams in the knockout stages.
